LabEx Blown Film Unit for the Extruder You Already Have
An independent blown film take-off and winding unit supplied without extruders. Connect it to a LabEx laboratory extruder, a Multi-X all-around extruder, or an extruder you already own to produce and test blown film.
LabEx Blown Film Unit
One film line, many extruders
The Blown Film Unit is the same film section used on our mono-layer, ABA and multilayer laboratory lines, but built as an independent unit with its own control system.
With LabEx extruders
Connects in line to LabEx laboratory extruders. The mechanical connection and operating interface are configured as part of the complete laboratory line.
With Multi-X extruders
Combine it with a Multi-X all-around extruder, which can also run pipes, profiles and flat film when it is not producing blown film.
With your existing extruder
An adapter and heated connection pipe connect the unit to an existing extruder. The connection heating and the Blown Film Unit are controlled from the unit’s panel, while the extruder normally retains its own controls.
Its own PLC and HMI
The unit is fully independent, with its own Schneider Electric PLC, touchscreen HMI, temperature and speed control, and safety system.
If you already have an extruder that you use for other applications, and you only need to test blown film from time to time, the Blown Film Unit is the shorter and more economical way to add that capability. Your extruder stays in use for everything else.
Die heads for mono-layer, ABA, 3-layer and 5-layer film
The unit is prepared for LabEx die heads in mono-layer, ABA and 3-layer versions. Project-specific 5-layer configurations are available for advanced development work.
Mono-layer
Single material structures for basic film testing, material screening, teaching and narrow web film production.
ABA
Two extruders feeding a three-layer die head. The same material in both outer skins, with a different core for recycled content or additives.
Three-layer
Three independent layers for true co-extrusion work, with free choice of material and layer ratio in each layer.
Five-layer, project-specific
Barrier and functional structures, for development work on packaging films where each layer has a separate job.
In some cases an existing die head can be used on the unit. Send us the make, model and dimensions, and we will confirm whether it can be adapted.
Main technical specifications
LabEx Blown Film Unit, grouped by machine section. The exact configuration depends on the die head and the extruder it is connected to.
- Die headLabEx die head in mono-layer, ABA, three-layer or project-specific five-layer version, made in PM 300 steel (DIN 1.2379), hard chrome plated or PVD-coated for long service life and smooth melt flow.
- Die insertsPrepared for die inserts Ø25-70 mm. Delivered with a Ø40 mm die as standard; other sizes on request.
- Film thickness and die gapFrom 10 to 250 microns. Die gap 1,0 mm as standard, other gaps available. Adjusting screws for profile optimisation.
- Temperature controlCeramic heater bands, 3 heating zones per die head, PLC controlled.
- ProtectionStainless steel perforated protection shield.
- Air ringHigh-efficiency single-lip air ring with uniform 360° air flow and adjustable air volume. Internal and external diameter 100 / 350 mm, four inlet ports, aluminium body. Film widths from 50 to 300 mm.
- Bubble coolingHigh air flow centrifugal turbo blower with AC motor controlled by a Schneider Electric inverter. Stainless steel air distributor and heat-resistant connection pipes.
- Calibrating basket and A-frameStainless steel rollers on high-speed bearings, with one-point adjustment so that all rollers open and close at the same time.
- Take-offNip roller assembly with a chromium-plated steel roller and a polyurethane-covered roller, geared AC motor with inverter control, and pneumatic opening and closing with a pressure regulator. Take-off width 300 mm as standard; 400 and 500 mm available.
- WinderNon-contact winder as standard, with AC inverter control of tension and winding speed and an air-expanding shaft for 76 mm (3″) cores. Contact and double-shaft winders available.
- ControlSchneider Electric PLC with touchscreen HMI for temperature, speed, tension and safety management, and for process visualisation.
- ElectricsMains: 3 × 400 V AC + N + PE, 50 Hz; control voltage: 24 V DC. Nominal power depends on the die head configuration. Other mains voltages on request.
- Standards and componentsIEC / DIN. Schneider Electric electrical components and PLC.
- FrameRobust steel frame with four lockable wheels and four adjustable legs. Stainless steel top surface; turbo blower mounted inside the lower frame.
- Optional equipmentScreen changers, melt pumps and feeding blocks, pressure sensors, high-capacity hopper loaders, gravimetric feeding systems, LED inspection light panels and a defect visualisation camera system.

Designed and manufactured in Denmark with durable, serviceable European components. From the die head to the PLC control system, the unit is built for a long working life and easy maintenance.
Materials you can test
With the right die head and extruder, the unit handles standard, recycled and bio-based materials in real film production conditions.
The materials that can be processed depend on the extruder and screw used, the die head configuration and the formulation. Tell us what you want to run and we will advise on the right setup.
Who uses the Blown Film Unit
Built for laboratories, development departments and technical schools that need real film production in a compact format.
Material development
Test new polymers, bio-based materials, recycled granules and additives under real film production conditions, with low material use.
Multilayer structures
Develop skin and core combinations: colour, slip and antiblock in the skins, recycled content or barrier and stiffness modifiers in the core.
Samples and small runs
Produce customer samples, prototypes and narrow web film with controlled layer ratios and repeatable settings.
Training and teaching
Show the principles of blown film extrusion clearly and safely, with quick changeovers and very low material consumption.
Chosen by universities, research centres and manufacturers
Our laboratory equipment is used across Europe for material development, quality control, teaching and small-scale production.
Already have an extruder?
Tell us the make and model of your extruder, the screw diameter, the maximum output and the dimensions of the outlet flange. We will confirm the adapter and prepare a proposal for the right blown film configuration.
